Michael J. Folmar, Special Agent in Charge of the Jacksonville Division of the FBI, announced today that Terry M. Lane has been named the recipient of the 2006 Director's Community Leadership Award. Established in 1990, the Director's Community Leadership Award is presented each year by FBI Field Offices to individuals whose achievements in the areas of crime prevention, drug deterrence, or similar educational programs have made a positive difference in their communities. Past Jacksonville recipients of the award include Delores Barr Weaver, former Sheriff Nat Glover, Pastor Lee Harris of the Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church, and Diane Kerr, former Jacksonville "Weed and Seed" chairperson. Mr. Lane is recognized for his efforts in reaching inner-city youth through Metro Kids Konnection, which he founded ten years ago after selling his cabinet shop. Headquartered in the Cleveland Arms Apartments, which is widely recognized as one of Jacksonville's toughest neighborhoods, Metro Kids Konnection houses a fully equipped computer lab and offers after-school programs designed to teach skills, increase motivation, and improve the study habits of participating children. Together with a staff of nine, Mr. Lane enrolled 145 children in his programs last year, with 85 attending daily. He also offers an eight-week summer program and has created a workshop for adults that offers instruction in resume writing and job skills. Since founding Metro Kids Konnection, Mr. Lane has witnessed a 55% drop in juvenile arrests in the Cleveland Arms area. On behalf of Director Robert S. Mueller III, the FBI is pleased to present the Director's Community Leadership Award to Terry M. Lane. The presentation will take place during a ceremony to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2007, at the FBI's Jacksonville Field Office, located at 7820 Arlington Expressway, Suite 200. Members of the media are welcome.
